Here are the rules on suspensions as we reach the business end of the World Cup:
Group stage cautions: Declan Rice and Jarell Quansah were the only two England players to receive yellow cards during the initial group stage. Rice was booked against Ghana, while Quansah was cautioned during the match against Panama.
First disciplinary wipe: For the expanded World Cup, FIFA introduced a rule in which all single yellow cards are erased after the group stage concludes. This ensures teams enter the knockout phases with a fresh disciplinary slate.
Clean slate for duo: Because of this timely group-stage amnesty, both Rice and Quansah had their previous yellow cards officially wiped clean. They no longer carry the burden of those bookings into the current knockout matches.
Bellingham's recent booking: Jude Bellingham received a yellow card in the 19th minute during England's last 32 victory against DR Congo. He is currently the only English player with an active yellow card on his tournament record.
Addressing the misconception: While three England players have been booked in total, it is factually incorrect that all three are currently carrying an active booking. Only Bellingham carries a yellow card into the upcoming last 16 clash.
Standard suspension rule: If a player accumulates two active yellow cards during the tournament, it triggers an automatic one-match suspension for the following game. Bellingham must avoid another booking to guarantee his availability.
Second disciplinary wipe: To further protect players later in the tournament, a second yellow card wipe will occur immediately after the quarter-final stage. This secondary reset is specifically designed to clear all accumulated cautions.
Safeguarding the final: The primary purpose of erasing yellow cards post-quarter-finals is to prevent players from missing the prestigious World Cup final. No player can be suspended for the grand finale simply due to minor fouls.
Red card consequences: Under these revised guidelines, the only way a player can be suspended for the championship match is through a severe disciplinary offence. A player must receive a red card to be banned from participating in the final.
