10-man England battled it out in Mexico City to come out on top in a hugely dramatic clash at the Azteca Stadium to set up a quarter-final meeting with Norway.
England produced a stellar defensive performance amidst the hostile atmosphere of the Estadio Azteca, overcoming co-hosts Mexico 3-2 to book a World Cup quarter-final showdown with Erling Haaland’s Norway.
Following a chaotic hour-long kick-off delay due to electrical storms in Mexico City, Thomas Tuchel’s tactical shape initially allowed the Three Lions to silence the home crowd.
A devastating first-half blitz saw an exceptional Jude Bellingham strike twice in just 98 seconds. While a stellar Jordan Pickford kept El Tri at bay with two world-class saves to deny Raúl Jiménez, he was helpless when Julián Quiñones drilled home a powerful reply just three minutes before the interval to shift momentum.
The second half devolved into pure drama when England defender Jarell Quansah received a straight red card for a high challenge on Jesús Gallardo, turning the stadium into a cauldron of noise.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the visitors briefly restored breathing room when Anthony Gordon drew a foul from goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, allowing Harry Kane to calmly slot home the resulting penalty.
Kane quickly turned from hero to villain, however, inadvertently conceding a penalty of his own by catching Brian Gutiérrez, which Jiménez confidently converted.
Facing intense pressure in a frantic finale, Tuchel subbed on Dan Burn and Djed Spence to shift into a rigid five-man backline, successfully enduring 11 gruelling minutes of stoppage time to preserve a historic knockout victory.
