Arsenal's midfield rebuild has suffered a setback.

The conversion of Piero Hincapie's loan deal into a permanent transfer remains the Gunners' sole incoming business this summer. Mikel Arteta's ambitions to reinforce his squad, particularly in the middle of the park, have been widely discussed, with the Spaniard reportedly setting his sights on two specific targets.

The north London side are gearing up to defend the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years as Arteta looks to strengthen his hand from a position of authority.

However, potential obstacles have emerged, with the asking price of one target and a club's reluctance to part with their prized asset threatening to derail proceedings. We examine the latest transfer developments emanating from the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal's reported pursuit of Moroccan talent Ayyoub Bouaddi has been widely chronicled throughout the summer. The 18-year-old Lille sensation has lit up the World Cup 2026 with the reigning AFCON champions progressing to the quarter-finals, where they are set to face France.

The teenager is also understood to have attracted attention from Manchester United and Liverpool, with the Premier League trio warned they may need to surpass the £100million mark should they wish to secure Bouaddi's signature.

Lille president Olivier Letang told Eurosport: "Many clubs are interested in him, but very few can afford him right now. He's already one of the best midfielders in the world and still has significant room for improvement. He's only 18 and has his whole future ahead of him. He's focused on continuing to develop and winning everything."

Referencing recent transfers involving Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali, Letang added: "How much have players like (Elliot) Anderson or (Sandro) Tonali been sold for, who are much older, but without room for improvement, so you have an idea of the value of Ayyoub, who has a unique profile at only 18 years old."

Before the president's remarks, earlier reports had indicated Lille were seeking around £60m for the midfielder, who remains under contract for another three years.

Bouaddi isn't Arsenal's sole midfield target, with Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes back on their radar this summer. The Magpies have already rejected a verbal approach for the Brazilian, whose representatives have been liaising with both clubs.

Eddie Howe has already waved goodbye to Anthony Gordon and Tonali, and Newcastle have firmly closed the door on losing another crucial player. Beyond telling Arsenal that Guimaraes isn't available, the Magpies are understood to be preparing a fresh contract offer for the 28-year-old.

The midfielder attracted Arsenal's attention when he made the move to Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon. Before joining the French side in 2020, he had been on the Gunners' watchlist during Arteta's inaugural campaign at the helm.
