Sverre Nypan could conceivably have been spending his summer in North America at the World Cup, where Norway and Erling Haaland stunned Brazil on Sunday night.
The talented Manchester City teenager was handed his senior debut in October 2025 and at that stage, in the early days of a loan-spell at Championship challengers Middlesbrough, he would have hoped to kick on at club and international level.
Instead, the loan at the Riverside Stadium was cut short in January and Nypan spent the second half of the season playing with City's Under-21 squad, meaning any hope of gatecrashing the World Cup squad disappeared.
But while his country has made a mark on the biggest stage of all this summer, for Nypan opportunity knocks. The 19-year-old is set to go on City's summer tour of Asia later this month with a chance to impress new boss Enzo Maresca.
Nypan's summer off means he will be among the first cohort of City players returning for pre-season training in two weeks' time and the midfielder will be keen to showcase his ability as he aims for a fresh start.
The Blues spent £12.5million on the playmaker a year ago, with Nypan being courted by several European heavyweights after impressing for Rosenborg in his homeland. City's move and the fee paid are a clear indicator of the belief they have in the young Norwegian. And since returning to Manchester in January, he's impressed Academy staff with his attitude, while also training with the first-team squad and travelling as a non-playing member to Wembley for the Carabao Cup victory over Arsenal in March.
"Some of his technical levels that are top, he's a great kid," said then City Under-21 boss Ben Wilkinson, speaking to the Manchester Evening News in March. "Most important, his attitude and the example he has set to the rest of the boys even though he is a similar age but just with that bit more experience in a senior dressing room he's been an absolute credit."
Nypan's attitude, mentality and ability mark him out as a potential star of the future. City will hope his progress over the next 12 months is more seamless than his opening year in England. Another loan switch feels the most likely option for him but his first task will be creating a positive first impression on Maresca. A place in the pre-season tour squad awaits and it's a chance Nypan will be determined to take.
