Three goals for the Three Lions
England were under pressure right from the off against co-hosts Mexico, who going in the last 16 tie, had never lost a World Cup match at the stunning Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
It was down to Jordan Pickford that the hosts weren't on course to continue that record, as the Everton goalkeeper made a brilliant diving save to stop Raul Jimenez's early header.
The Three Lions grew into the game and ten minutes before the break, scored an opening goal that was made in N5.
Declan Rice picked up the ball in midfield and, in a sight familiar to any Gooner, charged forward before feeding Bukayo Saka on the right wing. Bukayo then darted towards the touchline and floated an inch-perfect cross onto the head of Jude Bellingham, who tucked away his third goal of the tournament to put England in front.
It was two just 90 seconds later, this time Elliot Anderson winning the ball back high up the pitch. After Bellingham fed Harry Kane, the Bayern Munich striker returned the favour to the England no.10, who tucked away his second from close range.
Mexico fought back though and got right back into the game before the break through Julian Quinones. After England failed to clear a free-kick, the talented winger struck a sweet first-time volley into the roof of the net.
It threatened to go from bad to worse for Thomas Tuchel's side after the break when Jarell Quansah was shown a red card after a VAR review, but moments later, Anthony Gordon rounded Mexican goalkeeper Raul Rangel and won a penalty.
Kane stepped up and hammered the ball into the corner to restore England's two goal lead, only for the forward to then concede a spot kick at the other end, which Jimenez converted to put a thrilling tie back in the balance.
But despite late pressure from the co-hosts, Tuchel's side held out to set up a quarter-final meeting with Norway.

Odegaard's Norway stun Brazil
Martin Odegaard will go down in Norwegian football history as the first player to captain his country to a World Cup quarter-final.
Our skipper, who also wears the armband for his country, played the full 90 minutes as his side stunned Brazil in the round of 16 thanks to a late brace from Erling Haaland, who took his tournament tally to seven.
The South American side fought back into the game with a penalty in the 10th-minute of added time from Neymar, but it was too little too late for Brazil, bringing Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli's tournament campaigns to an end.
Victories for England and Norway set up an enticing quarter-final tie against each other in Miami on Saturday, July 11 (10pm UK). Morocco and France face each other in one of the ties on the other side of the bracket, with four last 16 ties still to be played, including Spain's headline clash with Portugal tonight (8pm UK).
