Wigan Athletic are clearly in no mood to stand still this summer. The Latics, who compete in EFL League One — the third tier of English football — endured a turbulent 2025–26 campaign that saw them finish 16th in the table.

Manager Gary Caldwell, who took charge in February after Ryan Lowe was dismissed with the club sitting in 22nd place, steadied the ship admirably to avoid the drop.

Now, with a full pre-season at his disposal, Caldwell is building a squad capable of mounting a much stronger challenge.

Wigan have already been busy in the transfer market. Akeel Higgins arrived from West Bromwich Albion on a two-year deal, the 20-year-old forward having previously worked under Caldwell at Exeter City last season.

Wigan have now confirmed the permanent signing of centre-back Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen from Scottish Championship side Dunfermline Athletic, on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old, born in Leeds, began his footballing journey in the Liverpool youth academy before moving to Leeds United at the age of 17.

After progressing through the Whites’ development ranks and earning a senior contract, he spent time on loan at Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Championship before making a permanent switch to Dunfermline in January 2025.

He went on to make 43 league appearances for the Pars, helping Neil Lennon’s side finish fourth in the Scottish Championship and reach the Scottish Cup final last season.

“I am delighted to be here, and I can’t wait to get going,” he told Latics TV.

“After I spoke to the Gaffer and all the staff, it seemed like a promising project moving forward, and the Club is looking to achieve big things this season. They think I will fit in well, which is always nice to hear, and I will try my best every time I put on the shirt.”

“The Gaffer played in my position, so I can learn from him and receive individual tips. He’s had a great career himself, and he will definitely help me.”

It follows plenty of academy graduates making moves in England’s lower leagues, including Bobby Clarke making a permanent move to Derby County.
