Roughly 1.4 million votes were counted, and Liverpool fans had their say with emphatic style, declaring Steven Gerrard as the greatest player in the club's history.

It came as part of a campaign from the Reds this summer, which saw supporters given a chance to voice their thoughts on who should be in the top 100 for the best players to grace the pitch at Anfield.

There were plenty of iconic names, with Mohamed Salah, Kenny Dalglish, and Graeme Souness all featuring towards the top of the combined list. However, none were able to topple Gerrard, who was voted the best Liverpool player in history, an award that clearly meant a lot to someone who grew up in the local area.

That much was clear when the midfielder made a heartfelt statement on the award, thanking the supporters for making him the player he was.

Speaking to the official Liverpool website, he said: "I feel very flattered and honoured. I think people have maybe recency bias, is it called, where I've played in the recent generations, if you like.

"But there've been some incredible players before me and after me, so [I'm] extremely flattered and humble. Thank you."

"I think the feeling from my side is mutual," Gerrard added on the Anfield crowd's adoration for him. "The fans made me, if you like. I couldn't have been the player that I was, I wouldn't have had the career that I had without the support that I had every three or four days playing football.

"To be recognised by fellow players during my career and win awards, they always felt special. But to be honoured by the supporters is even extra-special, I would say, because they're the ones that watch you closely every single game. So yeah, that feels special."

Gerrard finished his career with over 700 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 186 goals and assisting his teammates 156 times to round off an impressive stint at Anfield.

In that time, the 46-year-old won 11 trophies with the Reds, which included a famous Champions League comeback against AC Milan in 2005, which was all sparked with his heroics.

While there may be a feeling that his trophy cabinet should be even fuller, no one can question the unwavering loyalty he showed to Liverpool during a testing time in the club's successful history.

The next chapter is still waiting to be written, with players who will want to be remembered in the same way. Gerrard remains the pinnacle for any future star to top at Anfield.
