As the England squad celebrated in the dressing room after their historic win over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, Jordan Henderson was rushed to hospital after injuring his wrist in the post-match celebrations on the field.

The midfielder, who did not play a part in the 3-2 win but was booked on the sidelines, sustained “quite a serious injury” falling over an advertising hoarding. It came after the England squad sang along to Wonderwall by Oasis in front of Three Lions supporters inside the stadium.

Henderson left the field on a stretcher before being taken to a hospital in Mexico City. It was later confirmed he would not return to Kansas City with the rest of the squad on Sunday evening as he continued to receive medical treatment.

“My emotions are very mixed,” England boss Thomas Tuchel said. “I’m just proud of the mentality and the attitude. Round of 32, round of 16 is the moment in tournaments where you find a way to win.

“We did it with pure mentality, with heart. We overcame every obstacle that was thrown at us. I am so proud of the mentality and the will of this team. It is a very, very special night for us.

“Mixed feelings also because I am exhausted, of course, and emotional but also sad because Jordan got injured. He injured his wrist. He is at the moment at the hospital, so it is quite a serious injury.

“It just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don’t know the procedure what is going on. I just did the press, and the doc told me he’s in hospital.”

While not a starter for this England team, Henderson's experience and leadership qualities were much appreciated by Tuchel. The former Liverpool man's high standards in training and behind the scenes was not only appreciated by Tuchel and his coaching staff, but the England players too.

It's now unclear if Henderson can continue to be part of the group as the midfielder awaits results of scans at the hospital. It means Tuchel may be looking for someone to step up and that is where Rice comes in.

The Arsenal midfielder, who captained West Ham before moving to north London in July 2023 for a club record £100million, has also captained the Gunners and is seen as a natural leader on and off the pitch. Harry Kane revealed in November that Rice was even part of England's leadership group, along with Jude Bellingham, Marc Guehi and Bukayo Saka.

If Henderson's World Cup is over, Rice has the qualities to ensure standards do not slip. That will begin almost straight away as the camp begin preparing for Saturday's World Cup quarter-final clash with Norway.
