Arsenal are expected to progress in talks over a deal to sign Bruno Guimaraes following Brazil’s elimination from the World Cup. football.london understands early discussions have already taken place and a verbal offer around £45million was rejected.
There is a sense that, despite Newcastle United’s strong ‘not for sale’ stance, the Brazilian could leave if the player opens the door to an exit and Arsenal offer a figure in the region of £65million. Newcastle’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League is expected to be a big factor in the decision.
Guimaraes assisted four goals at the summer tournament, highlighting further his quality. His assist for Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli won the game late on against Japan in the last-32, however, he missed a penalty in the defeat to Norway as he watched his potential future North London teammate Martin Odegaard run circles around his side and progress to the last eight.

football.london understands that Arsenal have interest in several players currently plying their trade in North America at the summer tournament. Despite some clubs, such as Manchester City with Elliot Anderson, having had some success in securing signings of players not on their summer break, many players, including those in Arsenal’s sights have been focusing on the World Cup and letting any transfer noise play out in the background.
Equally, Arsenal have been extremely busy with their off-field reshuffle. After an internal review of the club’s medical department along with elements of the fitness, rehabilitation and strength and conditioning sectors, there have been major changes, with Zafa Iqbal the highest profile exit.
Furthermore, the club have appointed a new Academy Director, Pascal de Maesschalck. Transfers are now expected to take more of a centre stage, which will come as a relief to many supporters who have been agitated by the alleged ‘sluggishness’ of the club’s activity in the window.
Guimaraes would represent a major addition to the squad who will be looking to defend their Premier League title status.
