Arsenal transfer target Morten Hjulmand is “very close” to joining Atletico Madrid, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said that there has been interest from English teams, but the Sporting Lisbon captain is expected to make the switch to Spain:

“Atletico Madrid are very close to completing the deal for Morten Hjulmand. Premier League clubs are also calling, but Atletico Madrid are in control – just €5m apart from what Sporting want.

“So the deal is getting closer. The player agreed personal terms with Atletico Madrid. So Atleti are confident to get it done.”

Hjulmand had a rather low asking price

The midfielder was believed to be on the market for between €40m (£34m) and €50m (£43m), which made him an attractive option.

Reports in the Portuguese media had claimed that both Mikel Arteta’s side and Manchester City were tempted to make a move for Hjulmand, but it seems Atletico have made the most headway in the negotiations.

Arsenal have several midfield targets

Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes is seemingly the no.1 priority, with manager Mikel Arteta said to be pushing for the Brazilian international to be signed, having kept tabs on him for several years.

However, other names (in addition to Hjulmand) have come under consideration, including Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, Roma’s Manu Kone, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.

An enquiry for Scott was made last week, but the Cherries rejected the approach, making it clear in no uncertain terms that the 22-year-old is not for sale.

It is unknown whether another attempt will be made for Scott, but a second bid for Guimares is anticipated, after having had an initial verbal offer knocked back for the Magpies captain.
