Arne Slot is reportedly in talks to become the next manager of the Netherlands national team.

The Liverpool boss has been out of work since being relieved of his duties at Anfield on May 30, barely 12 months after lifting the Premier League title as head coach.

A disappointing second season on Merseyside, where the team lost 20 times across all competitions, led to his dismissal by sporting director Richard Hughes.

Slot has been enjoying a summer holiday with his family since leaving the Reds and links to Fulham following Marco Silva's departure from Craven Cottage quickly dissipated in early June.

However, a report from Sky Germany claims the ex-Feyenoord boss is negotiating to succeed Ronald Koeman as Oranje coach after the Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco in the World Cup last 32 on penalties last week.

Slot signed a three-year deal in 2024 to succeed Jurgen Klopp and hit the ground running at Anfield, establishing the highest win rate of any manager in the club's history during his first campaign, which led to the historic clinching of the 20th league title.

His Liverpool side won the league with four games to spare and eventually topped the table by 10 points but a big-spending summer of around £440m, which led to roughly £200m being recouped, led to a change in dynamic within the squad.

The passing of Diogo Jota in July 2025 also had an unquantifiable impact and results and performances suffered.

The Reds were beaten 12 times in the Premier League and eventually qualified for the Champions League by finishing fifth on the final day of the season in late May.

An end-of-season appraisal with Hughes concluded that Slot simply had too much to turn around to rediscover the winning touch at Anfield and he was sacked just days before Andoni Iraola was quickly installed as his successor on a two-year deal.

An international return for Slot would likely mark the second former Liverpool boss to become head coach of their national side, with Klopp closing in on succeeding Julian Nagelsmann as Germany manager.

Nagelsmann, like Koeman, stepped down following Germany's exit from the World Cup last week and Klopp is currently negotiating with the DFB (German FA) and his current employer, Red Bull, where he works as their head of global soccer.

Speaking over the weekend, Klopp told Magenta TV at the World Cup: “Yes, I can confirm the talks. Things moved pretty quickly. Julian stepped down. The DFB are looking for a successor. And they’re talking to me.

“What needs to happen now? Time. I’m under contract with Red Bull. I’ve said I’m interested in the talks. They will be intensive because this isn’t only about Julian Nagelsmann.

"I have an existing contract with Red Bull. I've said many times how much I enjoy this job. As a person, I usually honour contracts. But I've also made it clear that I'm interested in talks with the DFB.

“I also have to speak with (Red Bull CEO) Oliver Mintzlaff. He’s my employer. We’ve already touched on a few things. I assume he won’t stand in the way. I’ve been there for 19 months. It was an intense time.

“I’m ready. Once the talks begin, your mind starts racing. We have to change things fundamentally.

"There will have to be intensive discussions, because, of course, the problems we currently have cannot be pinned only on Julian Nagelsmann."
