Trey Nyoni looks like he’s heading into a pivotal summer amid interest from Swansea City and elsewhere.
The teenager did not see anywhere near the amount of senior football last season that many expected. His senior outings did little to move the needle, with cup cameos and six Premier League appearances offering only fleeting glimpses.
At 19 now, with a long-term deal in his back pocket and his development at a delicate stage, it’s a big summer for the England U18 international.
Interest has been building for months. Back in May it was reported that Aberdeen, Swansea City and Coventry City had all made enquiries over a potential loan move for the midfielder.
A temporary switch was very much the assumed route at that stage, with Liverpool traditionally preferring to retain control over their brightest young talents and revisit their futures after a season or two of regular minutes elsewhere.
That is why the latest line from Wales will raise eyebrows.
Swansea Independent now claim that Liverpool would be open not just to loaning Nyoni out, but to sanctioning a permanent departure if the price is right.
The report suggests there is a belief a bid in the region of £7 million could be enough to secure him, a figure that feels shockingly low for a player of his pedigree, age and contractual situation having signed a new deal last summer.
Former Liverpool development coach Victor Matos is the manager of Swansea, and it’s claimed the Portuguese coach has had his eye on Nyoni for the better part of two months.
That sort of number would represent a huge opportunity for the Welsh outfit to lock down one of England’s most highly regarded teenage midfielders on a long-term basis.
Meanwhile, Liverpool could view it the best option. If Nyoni is not projected to be a genuine first‑team regular within a realistic timeframe, cashing in now with a healthy sell‑on clause might be seen as smart business.
Even so, it would be difficult to see the teenager depart for such a low fee this summer.
