Man Utd very keen on transfer move for£50m Chelsea star

Andrey Santos to Manchester United: Red Devils eye £50m Chelsea star as midfield crisis deepens

Andrey Santos to Manchester United: Desperation does funny things to football clubs. Look at Old Trafford right now. The transfer window is shutting down options by the hour, and Manchester United are staring into a self-inflicted void.

They wanted Elliot Anderson. City bought him for a jaw-dropping, British record £116m. They looked at Mateus Fernandes. Tottenham nicked him from under West Ham’s nose for £85m. Now, with the options drying up faster than the Manchester rain, United have turned their attention toward Stamford Bridge. Specifically, toward Andrey Santos. Chelsea want £50m. It’s a steep price for a 22-year-old who spent large parts of last season sitting on the bench, but United are running out of choices.

Michael Carrick’s midfield is a ghost town. Casemiro has packed his bags. Manuel Ugarte went to the World Cup and picked up a nasty injury. That leaves Kobbie Mainoo. Just Mainoo. One fit, recognised central midfielder for a club that genuinely think they can get back into the Champions League next season. It is madness. Yes, a £35m deal for Atalanta’s Ederson is practically agreed, potentially rising to £39m, but the medical is delayed while he finishes up international duty. Even when he signs, one man cannot carry this workload. (Via The Independent)

Andrey Santos to Manchester United: What we know so far

So, why Santos?

If you look strictly at his Premier League stat sheet from last year, £50m looks like an absolute gamble. He made 27 appearances for Chelsea, but only started 13 times. He scored once, a cracking individual effort against Spurs in May, and averaged a modest 6.73 match rating. But stats without context are useless.

Santos was trapped in a logjam. You try displacing Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez when the hierarchy has decided they are the immovable core of the team. You don’t. Instead, you grab minutes where you can. The real talent was visible during his two loan spells at Strasbourg. Eleven goals from midfield across 43 games in France showed what happens when he actually gets a run in a starting XI.

He has a pedigree. He captained the Brazil under-20 side to continental glory, finishing as the joint-top scorer. The raw power and late runs into the box are there.

United have thrown lines out for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Palace’s Adam Wharton. Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni was mentioned, but that was always a pipe dream. Chelsea, meanwhile, have a bit of leverage now that Madrid have publicly distanced themselves from Enzo Fernandez, meaning Santos remains firmly rooted to the bench if he stays in West London.

Paying £50m for a player with one English top-flight goal is a massive risk. It smells a bit like panic buying. Carrick needs bodies, he needs legs, and he needs them before the season kicks off. Santos wants to play football. United simply have no one else to put on the pitch.
