Pep Chavarria to Chelsea
Pep Chavarria to Chelsea: Chelsea had a firm ‘no’ from Rayo Vallecano.
Pep Chavarria to Chelsea: That much is clear. The Blues aren’t walking away, though. Far from it. Fabrizio Romano says fresh talks are already booked. Xabi Alonso’s first proper summer in the Stamford Bridge hotseat is finally gaining momentum.
An opening bid was knocked back flat by the La Liga side. Despite that, the player wants the move. He has told his club he wants out to join Alonso’s project, and negotiations are chugging along behind the scenes.
Chelsea’s first offer sat at £9m (€9m) plus add-ons for the 28-year-old. Rayo rejected it instantly. They want something closer to £17m. It’s a gap, sure, but not one that will break the bank. Ben Jacobs confirmed this is a move driven entirely by Alonso, who desperately needs a specialist on the left. The Basque manager knows him personally, and Chelsea’s scouts have spent the year doing their homework. ( Via Football Fancast)
Why the sudden scramble for a left-back?
Marc Cucurella left a massive hole when he packed his bags for Real Madrid in a €60m deal. Jorrel Hato has filled in, but the squad is incredibly thin out wide. Alejandro Grimaldo was actually the top target, but the Leverkusen man wasn’t keen on a reunion. So, plan B. Rayo Vallecano. Look at the data from last season.
He managed one goal and two assists across 2,681 minutes. Not mind-blowing, but his FotMob average sat at a respectable 6.86. He started 29 games. His last runout was a solid 81 minutes in a 2-0 win against Villarreal back in May.
Defensively, he’s incredibly stubborn. He ranked third among all La Liga full-backs for defensive duels won and sixth for progressive carries. He averaged 1.75 tackles, 1.07 interceptions, and nearly three clearances per 90 minutes. Solid. Exactly what you expect from a defender playing for a mid-table side.
He has made 125 appearances for Rayo since moving from Zaragoza in 2022. Two goals, six assists, and a run to the Europa Conference League final last term. He isn’t a world-class creator. He’s just reliable. Consistent.

At 28, he doesn’t fit the usual youth-obsessed BlueCo profile. Chelsea have shifted their strategy this summer toward older heads. The price tag is modest by modern Premier League standards, and a second, improved bid is coming.
