There are numerous areas in the Chelsea squad that need improving in time for Xabi Alonso's debut season at Stamford Bridge. Not least, the left wing position.
After signing Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens last summer for a combined £92million, there was a sense of optimism from Blues chiefs regarding their options on the left-hand side of attack. Gittens showed glimpses of promise but lacked the end product - in his debut season at the Bridge, the England Under-21 international finished with just one goal in 27 appearances across all competitions.
Injuries played a major factor, of course; especially from Christmas onwards. Gittens will be hoping to get himself fit as soon as possible in order to make an immediate impression on Alonso, who takes his first training session as Chelsea boss on Thursday.

Garnacho will, too, although Chelsea are open to selling Garnacho after just one season at Stamford Bridge, with the former Manchester United wide man failing to impress during his short time in west London. As exclusively revealed on Monday afternoon, Chelsea will only consider permanent offers for the Argentine winger.
Tyrique George has signed for Everton on a four-year contract after Chelsea agreed a deal with the Toffees last week. The Merseyside club will pay the Blues an initial £18m and then a potential £6m in add-ons, with a 15% sell-on clause inserted into the Cobham graduate's contract at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
It would have left Chelsea a winger light but in essence, Geovany Quenda has come in and replaced George. The Portuguese wide man agreed to join Chelsea last year but would not move until this summer. Quenda is set to be part of Alonso's pre-season plans and has already been doing some individual work at the club's training base in Cobham.
The 19-year-old is viewed as not only one for the future but someone who can come in and play his role in the Chelsea first-team squad immediately. Quenda is able to play on both wings and will offer the Blues blistering pace to run in behind the opposition defence.

Pedro Neto can also play on the left-hand side of attack, so the Portugal international could be an option for Alonso there, but he is viewed as natural right winger. There is talk that Chelsea are in the market for a versatile option in attack as well, so there could also be another option.
Morgan Rogers is someone of long-term interest but Premier League champions Arsenal are the favourites for the England international's signature at the time of writing. Elsewhere, sources have not disclosed too many other names when it comes to the attacking targets but there will be talks behind the scenes to ensure Alonso has everything he wants by the time the transfer window slams shut on September 1.
