Former Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has steered Egypt through to the World Cup round of 16. But they now face their sternest examination yet as they head to Atlanta to take on Argentina.
This year has proved a tumultuous journey for the player affectionately known as 'The Egyptian King' by Reds supporters. His nine-year, silverware-filled spell at Anfield reached an emotional conclusion in May and his current mission has been guiding his nation into only their fourth ever World Cup.
The Pharaohs did not let their country down during the group stages, securing draws with Belgium and Iran before defeating New Zealand 3-1 to progress as runners-up in Group G. A tense penalty shootout against Australia followed in the round of 32 and further history was achieved as Egypt claimed their maiden World Cup knockout victory.

One year and 44 goals later, he put pen to paper on a new five-year deal, with his wages doubling in the process. In 2022, he signed a record-shattering three-year extension that reportedly netted him in excess of £350,000 per week.

That analogy was drawn by the Egyptian superstar owing to the extensive recovery and training apparatus he had fitted throughout the home. The Cheshire property boasts two gym rooms, dedicated to bodybuilding and strength training respectively, alongside hyperbaric chambers and cryotherapy facilities.
Speaking to L'Equipe in 2022, Salah said: "I am constantly looking to improve my physical condition. It's true that I like to say that my house looks like a hospital, [but] my wife doesn't like that! [She] says that I spend more time with my machines than with her!"

What is beyond doubt, however, is the affection he will always hold for the Reds. In his farewell message, he said: "I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club, it's a passion, it's a history, it's a spirit.
"I can't explain in words to anyone not part of this club. This club will always be my home to me and to my family. Thank you for everything."
