Chelsea have signed one player this window so far, and despite his young age the expectations are that he will contribute right away.

The Athletic’s Deal Sheet for the week is out, and there’s lots of juicy info in there for Chelsea fans.

This week’s edition focuses on the one incoming first team deal that’s completed – Marco Palestra’s signing from Atalanta. The question of if he’s a “ready to go signing” is answered thus.

“Chelsea want competition for places in every area of the pitch and have not signed Palestra to make up the numbers,” they wrote.

“He was named the Serie A defender of the year for his performances on loan at Cagliari last season, so has already proved he can thrive in one of the top five European leagues. Palestra missed only one of Cagliari’s 38 Serie A games, starting 34.

“At 21, he has more developing to do, but he should get plenty of game time.”

Palestra to compete with James – and to potentially replace Gusto

Palestra is a right back, and Chelsea already have two right backs. But the sense is that one of them could go before the window closes:

“Captain Reece James and Malo Gusto are the recognised right-backs, but James has increasingly played more centrally, both in midfield and as a right-sided central defender in a back three.

Meanwhile, Gusto’s future is uncertain, with Manchester City among the clubs interested.”

In other news…

West Ham’s relegation has provided a few interesting targets for Premier League clubs, and Chelsea have now been linked with one of them.

Chelsea’s attempts to sign a new left back are really dragging on – but by all accounts we will get there in the end. The Blues have been told what they need to pay to sign Pep Chavarria.
