Arsenal could see themselves move one step closer to securing a deal for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, as the Magpies reinforce their midfield with Sean Steur.

The news broke on Tuesday morning that United have agreed a deal with Ajax to the tune of £23million plus £3m in add-ons for the 18-year-old wonderkid, who is likely to make his way to Tyneside for a medical in the coming days.

While a deal is yet to be finalised, it appears as though the paperwork is all but a formality and that Steur will play at St James' Park for the new season.

While some may see the Dutchman as a replacement for an outgoing Sandro Tonali, who has joined Tottenham Hotspur in a £100m deal, the Magpies are seemingly looking for another engine room upgrade in Johan Manzambi.

The Athletic suggest that United will open talks with Freiburg for the Swiss midfielder in the coming days, following a stellar World Cup showing for his nation.

That could ultimately signal that Newcastle are looking for a replacement for Guimaraes, should Arsenal be able to turn the North East club's heads.

Eddie Howe's outfit are currently adamant that their skipper is not for sale, despite a wealth of interest from the Gunners.

But with Guimaraes now heading back to the Toon following Brazil's 2-1 exit to Norway in the World Cup's round of 16, talks could be accelerated should the 28-year-old decide on a change of scenery.

While the midfielder is considered priceless to United considering his importance to the team, it is thought that an offer of around £65m could be seriously entertained in the coming weeks.

Arsenal are thought to have entered talks with Newcastle earlier in the window with a verbal offer of £45m which was swiftly rebuffed.

Meanwhile, Football Insider claim that Newcastle are open to holding talks with Guimaraes over a new contract this summer following Arsenal's interest.

The box-to-box star managed nine goals and six assists for the Magpies in the Premier League alone last season, and is under contract until 2028.

He has also impressed on the world stage with his nation in North America over the past couple of weeks, bagging four assists for Brazil in five matches before they were ousted from the tournament.
