Liverpool legend and icon Virgil van Dijk and another Liverpool legend could leave the club this summer as an agent reveals crucial details.

Virgil Van Dijk and his legendary Liverpool career

When one looks back at the great defenders who have played in the Premier League, one simply cannot overlook Virgil Van Dijk. The Dutch defender has consistently been the best center-back in the league for nearly a decade. The 34-year-old has won some major trophies during his Liverpool career including the Premier League and Champions League. Van Dijk has truly stamped his name in the Premier League history books as an iconic legend.

Van Dijk’s career stats as per FOTMOB:

COMPETITION APPEARANCES GOALS CLEAN SHEETS

PREMIER LEAGUE 336 29 129

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 83 7 31

FA CUP 17 3 4

LEAGUE CUP 17 2 9

Van Dijk moved to Anfield from Southampton back in 2018 for a then-world-record fee of £75 million. Usually you see players moving to the Premier League for a massive transfer fee, crumble under price-tag pressure. But the Dutchman used the same pressure to establish himself in the league through world-class performances. Van Dijk was undeniably crucial in the Reds being a dominant force in England and Europe in the last decade.

Will Van Dijk leave Liverpool?

On paper and contract wise, Van Dijk still has a year left on his Liverpool contract. However, a Belfast-based football agent David Lavelle has revealed details regarding both Van Dijk and legendary Liverpool goal-keeper Alisson. He initially talked about Alisson’s Juventus move that eventually broke down, while also touching upon the Dutch center-back’s situation.

“I know he’s reached a personal agreement with Juventus. The Brazilian is worth around €15m (£13m) or so, and the Bianconeri entered the race for this goalkeeper with a brazen offer. I don’t know if the Juventus management offered €7m to Liverpool just because he’s in the final year of his contract,” Lavelle said.

“Despite that, he’s undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and Liverpool would like to keep him. Players of the calibre of Salah and Van Dijk are about to leave, and you need an older player in the dressing room. I think the Reds want to keep him for that reason,” Lavelle added.

While the agent has openly revealed the potential possibility of Van Dijk leaving, the defender’s current situation says otherwise. He is looking more likely to stay at Liverpool, than leaving. Despite TEAMtalk‘s reports about Liverpool seriously considering offers and reports of a possible AC Milan move, James Pearce from the Athletic has dismissed these speculations.

“New head coach Andoni Iraola [is] counting on him (Van Dijk) for 2026/27 and suggestions that LFC would even consider any offers for the talismanic defender are wide of the mark,”Pearce said.

How is the Liverpool squad looking ahead of the new season?

After an embarrassing fifth place finish in the Premier League in their title defense and the sacking of manager Arne Slot, Liverpool would be hoping for better times ahead. The Reds have appointed former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola as their new boss ahead of the 2026/27 season. This would instill a lot of hope amongst the Liverpool faithful because of Iraola’s promising track record at Bournemouth.

The Reds are going through a major squad overhaul as key players like Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson have all departed the club. Signings wise, the Reds have already confirmed the signings of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes and Victor Munoz from Osasuna. Furthermore, they are also actively looking to bring in Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig and Bradley Barcola from PSG.

With a fresh squad courtesy brand new signings paired with the arrival of Andoni Iraola, Liverpool will definitely be looking for a higher finish in the Premier League table this time around.
