David Moyes given next Scotland manager blessing but Scottish FA given two year Everton warning

David Moyes is the current favourite to be named Scotland’s next manager - but two ex-pros have their doubts.

David Moyes is being hailed as a dream managerial candidate for Scotland, but the Scottish FA have been warned he’s unlikely to want to replace the departing Steve Clarke right now.

Moyes, 63, is the bookies’ current favourite to be the next Scotland manager despite his current role at Everton. The national team are searching for a new name in the dugout after seeing Clarke resign from his role amid their early exit from the World Cup at the group stage this summer.

The early contender for the job was former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou, however, following his appointment at Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, Moyes’ odds of becoming Scotland’s manager have tumbled, alongside Falkirk head coach John McGlynn. Former Toffees midfielder Gareth Barry believes the Scottish FA will struggle to coax him away from Merseyside at this current time.

“Getting David Moyes would be a massive coup for the Scottish FA,” said Barry. “It's something that could happen down the line. While he has Everton in a good position and is enjoying the new stadium, he likely has another year or two there to try and get them back into Europe. One for the future, probably not now.”

Barry’s thoughts were echoed by former Scotland international Robert Snodgrass, who has backed the Everton boss to be an excellent appointment, but admits he has reservations on whether they could lure him away from his role as manager at the Hill Dickinson Stadium at this current juncture.

The ex-West Ham United and Hearts winger played under Moyes during the pair’s time in East London, and thinks he could be tempted to take the reins as Scotland’s next manager, but thinks the role has likely come up too soon for him.

“What a terrific manager and a great guy,” Snodgrass told talkSPORT Bet. “It is a testament to David Moyes that he has always had options in the England Premier League, which has been a big pull for him. He speaks so highly of Scotland, and I'm sure further down the line that might be the case. He did a terrific job last year and he will want to kick on again. He is fully equipped to succeed, that is David Moyes. That is why he has been at the top for so long. In terms of Scotland, who knows what might happen?”

A surprise name on the bookies' list to be the next Scotland manager is Steven Gerrard. Ranked at 20/1 to replace Clarke, the former England international would be a controversial choice. His ex-Three Lions teammate, Barry, admits he was shocked to see his name even mentioned amongst the favourites, and poured cold water on the move ever happening.

“Steven Gerrard as Scotland boss?” Barry told Lyllo Casino. “That would be a massive surprise. Knowing Steven Gerrard, it would be even more surprising if he restarted his managerial career with Scotland. I don't think he is that desperate to get back into management yet, but it would be a good appointment for Scotland.”
