Arsenal target spotted at training ground as move edges closer

Illan Meslier moved a step closer to becoming an Arsenal player after the goalkeeper was present at the club’s London Colney training ground on Monday as negotiations over a free transfer reached the final stages.

The 26-year-old is expected to join the Premier League champions following the expiry of his contract at Leeds United.

Meslier has been in discussions over personal terms after Arsenal accelerated their pursuit of a new deputy for David Raya.

The French goalkeeper was seen at the training ground as he completed the final formalities ahead of the proposed move.

Arsenal have been in the market for another goalkeeper following growing uncertainty over Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future.

The Spain international is exploring opportunities away from north London after slipping down the pecking order, with clubs aware of the £5 million release clause in his contract.

That situation prompted Arsenal to move quickly for Meslier, who became available after leaving Leeds as a free agent.

The Gunners believe the former France Under-21 international represents an experienced and cost-effective option to strengthen their goalkeeping department.

Meslier established himself as one of the Premier League’s most highly-rated young goalkeepers after breaking into the Leeds first team as a teenager.

The 6ft 7in shot-stopper made more than 200 appearances for the Yorkshire club across all competitions and played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League before becoming their undisputed first-choice goalkeeper.

However, his form dipped over the past two seasons, leading to Karl Darlow replacing him in the starting XI during the latter stages of the previous campaign.

A move to Arsenal now offers Meslier the opportunity to rebuild his career under Mikel Arteta while learning alongside fellow countryman Raya.

Although Raya remains firmly established as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper, the club are determined to maintain strong competition across every position as they prepare to defend their Premier League title and challenge again in the Champions League.

Meslier’s arrival would also provide valuable experience should Raya miss matches through injury or suspension during a demanding campaign.

Arsenal could also sanction another temporary departure in the goalkeeping department.

England Under-21 international Tommy Setford is attracting interest from several clubs, with Arsenal expected to consider loan offers that would provide the highly-rated youngster with regular first-team football while Meslier prepares to complete his switch to the Emirates Stadium.
