8 Liverpool youngsters sign new contracts with return to pre-season

Eight Liverpool youngsters, including Keyrol Figueroa, are believed to have signed new contracts at the club as they returned to the AXA Training Centre for pre-season.

All eight of the academy prospects to whom Liverpool offered new contracts this summer are believed to have signed.

Having not played a ‘competitive’ match since April, Liverpool’s brightest academy players are already back in Kirkby and preparing for a pre-season in which many will be given the chance to impress new head coach Andoni Iraola.

Nine players involved in the youth setup were released on July 1, but eight were offered new deals and they have all begun pre-season as expected.

Defenders Lucas Pitt (19 years old) and Prince Kobe Cisse (17) have both put pen to paper, as have midfielders Ben Trueman (19), Afolami Onanuga (19), Ollie O’Connor (17) and Kyle Kelly (20), who is a senior international for St. Kitts and Nevis.

The others to have been offered a new deal and been pictured in training were goalkeeper Matty Wright (18) and striker Figueroa (19).

Keyrol Figueroa shouldn’t leave permanently this summer

There had been some talk of Figueroa, who is the son of former Wigan player Maynor Figueroa, heading out on loan or leaving permanently.

The latter appears to have been ruled out, as the Reds have fended off interest from New York Red Bulls, Charlotte FC and La Liga team Elche.

Despite injury hampering the second half of his season, Figueroa really came on under new coach Rob Page, scoring 12 times for the under-21s, a tally only bettered by Kieran Morrison.

Speaking to This Is Anfield after he scored a hat-trick against Everton U21s in October, the young attacker said: “The manager has given me a lot of belief in showing my talent and it’s a proud moment.

“When I came in, I had a lot of different solutions that I needed and Rob gave me them.

“He has seen my potential and he spoke to me and said that I’m good on the ball, I’m a fantastic striker, we’ll have everyone else work for that, and just get yourself in the box and be that lethal, ruthless No. 9.

“He always says in the meetings about having energy, being disciplined and being ruthless. Those are his core anchors and he tells us all the time that’s what we need before the game.”

Like the rest of Liverpool’s best youth players, he will hope to catch Iraola’s eye before the season starts, with several youngsters required to make up the squad before the Reds’ World Cup participants return.

While Jayden Danns and Will Wright arguably sit above him in the pecking order of young forwards, a new first-team coach could change that.
