Jordan Henderson has broken his silence after sustaining an injury that will likely rule him out for the rest of the World Cup.

The England international was involved in a peculiar incident following the final whistle as Thomas Tuchel's players marked their 3-2 triumph over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. The 36-year-old sustained a suspected broken wrist after falling awkwardly while attempting to climb advertising hoardings to join celebrations with the traveling fans.

Henderson was carried from the stadium on a stretcher, needed oxygen, and was transported to the hospital for treatment while his teammates headed back to Kansas City. It was announced on Monday that the former Liverpool midfielder needed surgery.

The injury could mark Henderson's final outing in an England shirt, as the tournament is expected to be his farewell.

Nevertheless, the Brentford player refused to let the setback spoil his spirits, posting his first update since the injury.

Taking to social media, Henderson reflected on the action in Mexico City rather than dwelling on the severity of his injury.

"A night to remember that's for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges," Henderson said on Instagram. "So proud to be a part of this special team [emojis]. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday."

His England colleagues were swift to demonstrate their solidarity. Declan Rice posted: "Some man," while Morgan Rogers contributed: "What a guy."

Elliot Anderson and Djed Spence similarly showed their support with heart emojis for the injured midfielder.

Henderson is determined to stay with the squad to provide his encouragement and has maintained regular communication with his teammates. England defender Guehi offered an insight into Henderson's state of mind following the catastrophic injury.

Guehi told the FA's Lions' Den show: "Hendo's good, man. Hendo's in a better place than he was yesterday, and it was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we're just glad that he's on the road to speedy recovery."

Henderson, who secured his 90th England cap after coming on as a substitute against Panama in the Group stage, is the only England men's player to have featured at four World Cup tournaments.

Tuchel opted to select him for his experience and dressing room presence, despite substantial criticism of his inclusion.

Whether Henderson will return to the squad for their quarter-final encounter against Norway on Saturday remains uncertain.
