Sky Sports pundit and ex-Wolves forward Don Goodman does not believe that it would be wise for Mateus Mane to join Liverpool this summer.

Both the Reds and rivals Manchester United have been linked with the £35m-rated teenager in recent weeks, and when asked about the prospect of the 18-year-old moving to Anfield, Goodman said:

“Mateus Mane has only started 19 league games. He’s not ready for Liverpool just yet. He has undoubted talent and plays with a fearlessness that is great to watch, but he’s still very raw and even naive at times. For me, he would be best served staying at Wolves, playing week in, week out in a side you’d expect to be winning plenty of football matches.”

“It’s a team he can star in and get loads of minutes under his belt, where you’d expect him to excel in the Championship and build on that vital first-team experience. If he went to Liverpool, I don’t think he’d get those minutes.”

Mane’s preferred position is also an issue

As well concerns about a lack of game time, it should also be pointed out that the youngster has mostly been deployed as a no.10 by Wolves, which is certainly not an area the Reds need to reinforce.

In addition to Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai, Harvey Elliott has also just returned from his loan spell at Aston Villa. Mane would not be able to play in his preferred role if he were to make the switch to Merseyside.

Who could Liverpool pursue instead?

At the moment, it is believed that the top target to strengthen the front three is Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola. With the European champions expected to sign both Maghnes Akliouche and Yan Diomande, there won’t be much room for Barcola, considering that head coach Luis Enrique already has the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue at his disposal.

Barcola’s contract situation is another reason why he could well be on the move this summer. He has less than two years remaining on his current deal and discussions over an extension have stalled.
