According to the latest transfer news, Liverpool are still monitoring Adam Wharton this summer. The Merseyside club are reportedly weighing up a player-plus-cash offer involving Harvey Elliott. The plan could ease the cost of a deal worth close to £70 million, sources close to the talks suggest.
Adam Wharton swap deal takes shape
As reported by TEAMtalk, the Reds are exploring a swap that would see Elliott head to south London, with a move for Adam Wharton attached to the package. Palace reportedly want close to £70 million for their prized midfielder. However, including Elliott could trim the final fee by £35-40 million. That would offer a cheaper route to a deal.
Journalist Danny Gallagher first flagged the plan. He noted that Liverpool are looking into the details of an Adam Wharton agreement. New head coach Andoni Iraola still wants to assess Elliott before allowing any exit, though. Even so, the move could progress quickly once both squads agree on the framework.
From a football standpoint, the timing lines up with Palace’s recent transfer pattern. Palace have already lost key players such as Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi in recent windows. As a result, they want to avoid letting another prized player go below their asking price, even with a makeweight included in the offer.

Palace stance and Elliott’s price tag
As reported by Livescore, Elliott’s loan spell at Aston Villa failed to work out, with limited game time under Unai Emery. He managed only a handful of appearances for Unai Emery’s side last season. That meant he fell short of the number needed to trigger a proposed £35 million permanent move. So, his value appears to have dropped, with some reports pointing to a figure closer to £20-25 million as a straight sale.
Even so, Liverpool believe folding him into a bigger package could suit everyone. Palace would recoup useful funds for a squad player who no longer fits Iraola’s plans. Meanwhile, the Reds would gain a cheaper path to Adam Wharton, a player they have long admired.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, other transfer fees have shifted expectations this summer. Manchester City’s move for Elliot Anderson reportedly set a new benchmark for academy graduates. So, Palace feel little pressure to lower their asking price for now, and talks may take a while to develop.
What the Adam Wharton signing would mean to the Reds?
A completed deal would hand Iraola a real upgrade in central midfield. Indeed, this is an area Liverpool have quietly focused on all summer. The 22-year-old’s passing range and calmness under pressure have made him one of the most admired young players in his position. Adding him to the midfield unit could bring fresh legs and creativity to the side.
For Palace, losing their star man would be a significant blow. After all, he played a key role in a trophy-laden campaign that included FA Cup and Community Shield glory. Still, a sale near their valuation would be a record fee for the club and would fund further rebuilding. Fans on both sides will watch closely as the summer window continues.
As reported by Tribal Football, England manager Thomas Tuchel left the midfielder out of his World Cup squad. A fresh start at a bigger club could therefore boost his case for a recall. For now, both sides are reportedly assessing whether a deal can be agreed before Adam Wharton’s future becomes clearer ahead of pre-season.
