The first links to the Brazilian international emerged last month, but with international commitments, his focus was on the World Cup.
Arsenal are reportedly ready to make a £60m offer, but as yet there has been no official contact between the clubs, with intermediaries involved at this moment in time.
The 28 year old, who turns 29 in November but until then remains 28 because that’s how it works, provided 4 assists during the tournament, but Brazil were eliminated by Martin Odegaard’s Norway on Sunday.
This is the second summer in a row Newcastle have had a big name player ask to leave, and last year Alexander Isak’s stand-off with the club ended up being hugely detrimental to his season and Liverpool’s. Having already sold Sandro Tonali to Sp*rs, the Tynesiders won’t be in much of a hurry to lose their best midfielder, and certainly not without looking for a fee commensurate to that position within the squad.
This has all the hallmarks of a protracted saga, but let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
