Liverpool’s summer transfer plans have suffered a sudden ‘blow’ after a top 16-year-old target rejected Anfield interest to sign a new deal with their direct rivals.
For a while, it seemed like a carbon copy of the recruitment masterstroke that brought Rio Ngumoha north from Chelsea. About a month ago, it was reported that Liverpool’s intense admiration for Manchester City’s teenage prodigy Xavier Parker.
It looked increasingly like a matter of when, not if, the 16-year-old attacking midfielder would cross the M62 to join Andoni Iraola’s evolving Anfield project.
But elite football rarely moves in straight lines, especially when you are trying to raid a direct rival. Manchester City have reacted accordingly, flexing their muscles just as formal negotiations reached the critical phase.
The definitive blow landed via The Secret Scout on X:
“Spoken with Man City this afternoon. They are expecting top talent Xavier Parker to sign new deal after formal talks this morning. Liverpool’s hierarchy identified him as next emerging talent. Huge bonus for the club #MCFC”

The brief pursuit is over. The 16-year-old England youth international who only joined City from West Ham in 2024 is staying put. According to The Talent Hunter, the youngster simply weighed up his options and chose the Etihad over Anfield.
“Despite significant interest from some of the biggest clubs in the country, 16 year-old Xavier Parker is set to stay at Manchester City. Last month, there were multiple reports from credible sources that Xavier was expected to leave City and join Liverpool. A host of other Premier League clubs were also said to be closely monitoring him. However, Xavier has now chosen to stay at Manchester City.”
No plan B? The reality of the summer market
Naturally, the standard social media meltdown. The old stick to beat the club with is that when Liverpool miss out on a target, they don’t have a ‘Plan B’ lined up.
But this summer it’s different. Clubs are in a massive stand-off across Europe. Parker is a serious talent he bagged six goals and seven assists in 20 games for City’s U18s last year and his versatility makes him exactly the type of player the Reds love to recruit. But at 16, regular minutes and the right environment are what matters most to his development, and he feels he has that in Manchester.
Meanwhile, the rumour mill keeps spinning. Mexico’s 17-year-old World Cup breakout star Gilberto Mora is the latest name being linked to Anfield by outlets across Europe.
Missing out on Parker stings, but let’s look at the bigger picture. Liverpool have already made a steady start to the window. Highly-rated defender Jeremy Jacquet has arrived from Rennes, and Victor Munoz was snapped up from Osasuna after the club triggered his release clause.
With pre-season kicking off and the World Cup almost wrapped up, Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola are expected to step up their transfer business. Senior reinforcements are still needed out wide to prepare for life after Mohamed Salah, while a new central midfielder and another defender remain firmly on the summer shortlist.
