Everton are progressing in talks to sign Chelsea winger Tyrique George on a permanent deal for a fee in excess of £20m.

George spent the second half of the 25-26 season on loan at Everton, joining during the January transfer window.

The Chelsea winger struggled to cement a regular starting spot in David Moyes' side but certainly showed promise during cameo appearances for the Toffees.

George started just one Premier League game for Everton during the 25/26 campaign, playing a total of 218 minutes. Despite that, the Toffees have clearly seen enough to try and push through for a permanent deal, with talks now progressing.

Everton progressing with George deal

According to a report from The Athletic, Everton are progressing in talks to sign Chelsea winger George on a permanent deal in the summer transfer window.

Everton did have the option to sign George on a permanent basis for a fee of £25 million, but they opted against triggering the buy option. Instead, Everton looked to negotiate the fee, and the report claims that they will pay less up front in order to get a deal over the line.

Everton will still pay close to £25 million, including add-ons, while talks could conclude by the end of this week.

Many were questioning why Everton opted against signing George permanently by triggering the buy option, but the Merseyside club were clearly looking to ensure the deal favoured them financially.

After a reasonably slow start to the summer transfer window, Everton are now making moves in the market this week.

On Monday afternoon, reports emerged that Everton have agreed a deal to sign Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney. The Toffees are set to pay an initial fee of £16.5m, with add-ons taking the deal close to £25m.

That certainly won't be the end of Everton's business, as there's no doubt they need to bring in reinforcements all over the pitch. The Toffees are desperate to bring in a new right-back during the summer transfer window, especially with Seamus Coleman leaving the club.

It will be interesting to see whether the signing of George impacts Everton's pursuit of Manchester City winger Jack Grealish. The England international was also on loan at Everton last season, making a positive impact.

George and Grealish are both wingers who prefer to operate off the left-hand side. It remains to be seen whether the Toffees will secure a permanent deal for Grealish or potentially another loan move.
