Tottenham have not given up on the idea of prising Cody Gakpo away from Liverpool this summer, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the north London club's interest in the Netherlands international is still alive.
Gakpo enjoyed a productive World Cup, scoring three goals in four appearances before his country's exit, and was a mainstay for Liverpool under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. New boss Andoni Iraola is now weighing up his attacking options for next season, leaving a question mark over where the 27-year-old fits into his plans.
"Tottenham really appreciate Cody Gakpo from Liverpool," Romano said on his YouTube channel. "But in this case it will depend on what happens at Liverpool because, at the moment, doors for an exit are not open.
> "Tottenham keep thinking of Cody Gakpo after reshaping their midfield with Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali."
Spurs have been among the busiest clubs in the Premier League this summer, with Fernandes arriving from West Ham and Tonali agreeing a deal worth up to £100m from Newcastle, in addition to free transfers for Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have already signed Victor Munoz from Osasuna and could look at further wide options, which may influence whether Gakpo is deemed surplus. The 27-year-old joined from PSV in January 2023 and is under contract until 2030, meaning any deal would require a significant Tottenham bid.
For now, Romano suggests any move remains firmly at the interest stage rather than anything more concrete, with Liverpool's stance likely to become clearer once pre-season is under way and Iraola has had the chance to assess his squad following the World Cup.
Gakpo endured a mixed 2025-26 campaign at club level, but his form in the United States has rekindled interest in his services, with his height, movement off the left and ability to play centrally all seen as attractive qualities. Should Liverpool land a replacement winger elsewhere this summer, it could open the door for Tottenham to test their resolve with a formal proposal - something Romano says has not yet arrived.
Spurs' recruitment has been aggressive this window, and adding another attacking option would round out a squad already reshaped in defence and midfield.
