9th July 1976

On this day in 1976, Arsenal Football Club made a significant managerial change by appointing Terry Neill as their new manager. At just 34 years old, Neill became the youngest manager in the club’s history. Prior to his appointment at Arsenal, Neill had a notable career both as a player and a manager. He was a former captain of Arsenal and had previously managed Hull City and Tottenham Hotspur. His return to Highbury marked the beginning of a new era for the club, as he took over from Bertie Mee, who had been at the helm since 1966.

9th July 2006

The 2006 FIFA World Cup final, held at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, witnessed one of the most infamous incidents in football history on this day. The match was contested between Italy and France, and as the game progressed into extra time with the score tied at 1-1, a dramatic event unfolded. The incident involved two key players: Zinedine Zidane of France and Marco Materazzi of Italy, both of whom had scored earlier in the match.

The altercation began with a shirt tug and an exchange of words between the two players. It culminated in Zidane headbutting Materazzi in the chest, sending the Italian to the ground. The referee promptly issued a red card to Zidane, resulting in his expulsion from the match. The incident sparked widespread speculation about what was said between the two players, with reports suggesting that an insulting comment about a family member provoked Zidane’s reaction.

Despite the controversy, the match continued to a penalty shootout after extra time ended without further goals. Italy emerged victorious, defeating France 5-3 on penalties to claim their fourth World Cup title. Despite his red card, Zidane was awarded the player of the tournament accolade, but the final marked his last appearance for the French national team.
