Liverpool and Man United interested in 18-year-old MLS defender

The World Cup enters the quarter-final stage on Thursday night when 2018 winners France face African Cup of Nations holders Morocco in Boston.

England will have to wait until Saturday for their quarter-final, when they face surprise package Norway in Miami for a place in the last four.

This World Cup – as is often the case – has acted as the ideal environment for young players to showcase their talent to the world, with the transfer window ongoing.

With that in mind, it has emerged that one talented young defender is firmly on the radar of several Premier League clubs.

TEAMtalk claims that Australia defender Lucas Herrington looks set for a huge move this summer, with Liverpool and Manchester United among the clubs interested in him.

Herrington, 18, currently plies his trade in the MLS with Colorado Rapids, having joined the club from Australian side Brisbane Road in January.

Since moving to the United States, the centre-back has made 17 appearances for the Rapids, scoring once.

His impressive displays in MLS earned him a place in the Australia squad for the World Cup, and Herrington featured in their final group game before also starting the Socceroos’ last 32 tie against Egypt.

The young defender unfortunately missed a penalty as Australia were knocked out of the competition on penalties, but the report suggests that clubs from all over Europe are showing interest in the player.

Barcelona are said to be one of those interested, while German sides Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig are also keeping tabs on the player.

Dutch side Ajax, Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise, French clubs Monaco and Lyon, and Italian giants Atalanta are all also credited with an interest in the teenager.

In the Premier League, Liverpool and United are joined by Everton, Aston Villa and Newcastle United in having closely monitored the player’s progress, according to the report.
