Atletico Madrid have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Morten Hjulmand following rumours linking the midfielder to Arsenal. Diego Simeone's side are said to have struck a £38million deal with Sporting CP for the Danish star.

The news comes in the aftermath of Bruno Guimaraes expressing his desire to leave Newcastle United with the Gunners linked. The Premier League champions have been repeatedly linked with Hjulmand, who is said to be a lifelong Arsenal supporter.

Fabrizio Romano and Ruben Aria have reported that the 27-year-old will sign a five-year deal in the Spanish capital, with the midfielder arriving on Thursday to put the finishing touches on the move.

It was previously reported that Arsenal could swoop after Atletico had an initial bid rejected by the Liga Portugal outfit. But it has been said that terms are agreed, and an exchange of paperwork is underway.

But Aria has reported that Hjulmand's willingness was key in a deal being struck after Sporting promised to sanction a deal if the right offer was tabled.

Should Hjulmand be an alternative, it leaves Arsenal looking elsewhere for potential midfield reinforcements. But the wheels appear to be in motion to sign the Magpies' star Bruno.

The Brazilian is left to lick his wounds after Carlo Ancelotti's side were stunned in the last-16 by dark horses Norway as Erling Haaland's brace was enough.

Guimaraes has shown a desire to leave St. James' Park this summer, marking the latest high-profile North East exit after Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali left at the end of the season, following Alexander Isak's big-money move to Liverpool 12 months ago.

The Guardian has reported that the Gunners are ready to step up their interest in the midfielder after he informed his current club that he wants to move to North London.

It has been said that he has his heart set on a move to the capital and Arsenal after talks were held with his representatives last month.

Arsenal are said to be readying a bid in the region of £60million but after the aforementioned departures of star men Tonali and Gordon, Newcastle are reluctant to offload their captain.

Midfielders appear to be on the agenda for the Premier League champions as questions over Declan Rice's long-term fitness have been raised. Morocco star Ayyoub Bouaddi and Alex Scott have been named as alternatives with Christian Norgaard's future unclear.

The attacking department is also mentioned as Arsenal look to strengthen their attacking options. Morgan Rogers is the number one target, as per The Guardian.

But Aston Villa are said to be demanding in excess of £100million for the England international while Julian Alvarez is another option but equally expensive with Barcelona also in the chase.
