Arsenal are expected to sign Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis once Leandro Trossard’s exit from the Emirates is confirmed, according to The Athletic reporter James McNicholas.

The journalist, who broke the news that the Gunners are set to recruit free agent Illan Meslier, says a move for Tzolis is also very likely:

“I think [Christos] Tzolis, the Greek international, will probably be the guy who comes in from Club Brugge… I think that will be the deal that happens, probably about €40m (£34m) for a player who’s, you know, six, seven years younger than [Leandro] Trossard. That’s probably what you need to do. Renew the squad, keep it fresh.”

“I can’t say I know a great deal about Tzolis as a player and as a prospect. He obviously has played in England before with Norwich, but didn’t necessarily make a great impact there, but he’s had a fantastic time in Belgium, particularly last season, so let’s see.”

“I mean, it’s not the marquee signing that anyone’s looking for. We’re all hoping for that kind of Morgan Rogers, Bradley Barcola figure, and indeed I believe that’s the sort of deal Arsenal would like to do and are working on. But nothing like that’s going to take place until after the World Cup, and there’s going to be probably quite a lot more brinkmanship before we get there.”

Tzolis had an excellent season for Club Brugge

As McNicholas points out, the 24-year-old turned heads with his performances last campaign, scoring 22 goals and providing 29 assists in 52 appearances.

The numbers do, though, look a bit less impressive when you assess his output in the Champions League, where he scored just 2 goals and contributed 1 assist in 9 matches.

Will Trossard leave Arsenal?

The Gunners have accepted an offer in the region of €20m (£17m) for Leandro Trossard from Besiktas, and it is now up to the player whether he wants to make the switch to Turkey.

Besiktas are expected to send out a delegation to the United States to try and persuade the player. Considering that he has one year left on his current deal at the Premier League champions, and there is no indication that he will be given an extension, Trossard will likely be open to a lucrative, long-term contract offer, but we shall have to wait and see how the meeting between the two parties goes.
