Liverpool star Jeremie Frimpong has posted an update on social media of himself training ahead of joining up with new boss Andoni Iraola next week.

Frimpong, who made 35 appearances for the Reds during his debut campaign, was doing some work on a pitch in Los Angeles before Liverpool's pre-season starts properly on Monday, in a video that he shared to his Instagram story.

The player can be seen going through various drills while sporting an Aston Villa shirt with Argentine attacking midfielder Emi Buendia's name on the back. The pair are friends from their short time together at Bayer Leverkusen in the first half of 2025.

Buendia was on loan in Germany for half a season, during which time he and Frimpong played nine matches together in all competitions under Xabi Alonso.

When Buendia returned to Villa Park, he re-established himself as a key man under Unai Emery. Frimpong moved to Merseyside in the same summer for a fee of around $40 million (£29 million).

It isn't the first time that he has been spotted wearing an Aston Villa jersey. In 2024, while celebrating winning the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, he wore the shirt of another ex-teammate, Moussa Diaby.

At the start of the summer, Alonso was tipped to reunite with Frimpong having now taken over as the manager of Chelsea. Gaizka Mendieta suggested that it could be the best way of getting back to his best form.

"Frimpong could be a good asset for Alonso," Mendieta told Grosvenor Sport. "Managers have players they trust from previous clubs and there will be a belief from the player that they can find that form again.

"We often see players reuniting with former coaches for that reason, especially if things aren't going well for those players like Frimpong at Liverpool.

"It’s a way of getting them back to form, hoping you can get the maximum out of the player and help you win things.

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.

"I’m sure Chelsea will be active again in the market; they have to let players leave and bring new players in to suit the new coach."

Frimpong struggled to step up to the Premier League's intensity during his debut campaign at Liverpool. Getting fitter and stronger this summer will make a big difference.

"I’ve been faced with a lot of injuries," Frimpong told The Telegraph in April. "Normally, I don’t get injured. The only time I had a lay-off before was for a surgery after a bad tackle."

Liverpool.com says: Frimpong needs a good summer to ensure he is in a position to kick on next season. So far, he hasn't quite nailed down either the right-back or the right wing spot, but he might be needed at full-back much more regularly under Iraola, particularly with Conor Bradley coming back from a long-term issue.
