The battle for England’s brightest young academy talent has been nothing short of fierce this summer, with Liverpool and Manchester City repeatedly going head-to-head for the country’s most coveted prospects.
It has become a recurring theme. Wherever Liverpool look, City are not far behind.
That rivalry was on full display earlier in the window when the two giants clashed over the future of Liverpool’s own Joshua Abe.
The highly-rated youngster was courted heavily by several Premier League clubs, with reports suggesting he was offered pro terms in excess of £50,000 per week to leave Anfield. In the end, Abe chose to stay.
Liverpool’s academy scouting hadn’t stopped there, though. The Reds had also been tracking Man City academy midfielder Xavier Parker. However, it’s been reported that the 16-year-old will remain at the Etihad.
Now, attention turns to another name out of Leicester’s increasingly raided academy — 15-year-old midfielder Darren Motsi.
The Zimbabwean-born youngster, who has chosen to represent England at youth level, has already played for Leicester’s under-21s and even trained with their first team despite his age. His vision, passing range, composure and powerful left foot have turned heads across the game.
According to The Secret Scout, Manchester City have moved decisively for Motsi following their failure to land Abe – with the player having visited the club alongside his family and City looking to wrap up the deal quickly.
Liverpool had previously been credited with interest, but with City now closing in fast, the Reds may find themselves on the wrong side of this one.
