Confirmed: Arsenal sign free agent Illan Meslier

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Leeds United.

The 26-year-old leaves Elland Road after making 215 appearances, having initially joined the club on loan from Lorient in 2019. The move was made permanent the following summer in a deal worth £5 million.

Meslier helped Leeds win promotion to the Premier League twice, in 2019/20 and 2024/25, but slipped down the pecking order in dramatic fashion last season as manager Daniel Farke instead turned to Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow.

The Frenchman, who will wear the number 30 shirt, is expected to serve as Mikel Arteta’s third-choice goalkeeper this season following Karl Hein’s sale to Werder Bremen and with England under-21 international Tommy Setford set to head out on loan.

While rumours persist that Kepa Arrizabalaga could leave this summer if a club activates his £5 million release clause, there remains a strong chance the Spaniard will continue as David Raya’s understudy.
