Bruno Guimaraes looks increasingly likely to leave Newcastle United this summer, and the picture around his future has shifted dramatically in the last 24 hours.
Guimaraes heads into this window off the back of an impressive 2026 World Cup with Brazil.
The 28-year-old contributed four assists at the tournament. His campaign was not flawless, he missed a crucial penalty in Brazil’s shock defeat to Norway, but overall his performances have only strengthened interest from Europe’s elite.
Since joining Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022, Guimaraes has become the heartbeat of Eddie Howe’s side, making over 150 appearances in all competitions and regularly chipping in with goals from midfield. Newcastle’s project was originally built around him.
But that seemingly stalling project means that the 28-yer-old wants to move on.
Liverpool did explore the possibility of bringing Guimaraes to Anfield earlier this summer. According to Ben Jacobs, he explained that Liverpool’s approach mirrored Manchester United’s earlier interest: a conversation with the agent, but no formal offer and no real progression beyond that stage.
Newcastle have made it clear that prising Guimarães away from St James’ Park would require a huge fee – in the region of £100 million.
But Arsenal are remaining undeterred. According to L’Équipe, the Gunners have reached an agreement with the Brazilian on a five-year contract.
Mikel Arteta’s side saw an initial €70m offer was turned down by the Magpies’ hierarchy, but are now expected to return with an improved proposal, this time edging closer to the €90m.
Guimaraes has reportedly already told Newcastle that he wants to join the London club.
It’s claimed the North London outfit are fully aware he has only two years left on his deal and that this summer represents their best chance to command a premium fee.
For Liverpool, it seems that they were not seriously in for the Magpies midfielder, and it appears Mikel Arteta will get yet more reinforcments for his title-winning team.
