France captain Kylian Mbappe has established himself among the greatest players in FIFA World Cup history after starring in three editions of the tournament.
The forward announced himself on the global stage at the 2018 World Cup, scoring his first goal against Peru at just 19 years and 183 days to become France’s youngest World Cup goalscorer.
He went on to score four goals in the tournament, including in the final against Croatia, as France lifted their second World Cup trophy.
Mbappe continued his remarkable form in 2022, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals in seven matches.
He scored a hat-trick in the final against Argentina, becoming the first player since Geoff Hurst in 1966 to achieve the feat in a World Cup final, although France ultimately lost on penalties.
Mbappe looks to lead France to more international success. The forward has long been linked with a move to Liverpool, with speculation dating back to his time at Monaco.
Mbappe previously confirmed he held talks with Liverpool, while former Reds manager Jurgen Klopp revealed he attempted to sign the French superstar during his time at Anfield.
Klopp told Magenta TV, as quoted by Jan Aage Fjørtoft: “We flew from Blackpool to Nice. In Nice, the entire Mbappe family boarded a private jet with five rooms. We really went all out. Then we flew around in a circle, talked with the family, ate good food. We couldn’t be seen. We flew in a circle. It was fantastic. And then he went to Paris!”
Mbappé finished last season as Real Madrid’s top scorer, registering 42 goals and seven assists in 44 appearances across all competitions as Madrid ended the campaign second in La Liga and without a trophy.
