As the World Cup continues to dominate the football landscape, feverish work is going on at Arsenal to ensure they are ready for their title defence. The only senior outfield addition to the squad so far is Ecuador star Piero Hincapie, who has completed a £34.5million move from Bayer Leverkusen following a successful loan spell.

With the first group of players due back for pre-season training soon, activity is expected to accelerate as attention turns to strengthening the squad.

Several arrivals and departures are anticipated over the next few weeks as sporting director Andrea Berta looks to make the most of a reported £250m transfer budget.

Guimaraes agreement

Arsenal have reportedly agreed terms with Bruno Guimaraes, as the Brazilian seeks to leave Newcastle.

Following his country's last-16 exit to Norway at the World Cup, the 28-year-old is now focused on securing a move to north London. The Gunners are ready to lodge an offer of around £60million.

Newcastle have insisted Guimaraes is not for sale, although the Magpies have held a similar stance on other players before eventually sanctioning a sale. Sandro Tonali has already left the north-east for Tottenham this summer for £100m.

While a deal between the clubs may take a while to strike, Guimaraes has already agreed a five-year contract with the Gunners, according to French title L'Equipe.

Arsenal have completed the signing of goalkeeper Illan Meslier, 26, following his exit from Leeds United.

Meslier spent seven years in Yorkshire, making 215 appearances, including 70 clean sheets. He recently became a free agent after his contract expired.

Meslier said: "I'm extremely happy. It's a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England.

"I'm very happy and very proud to join Arsenal. I cannot wait to show the love that I've got for this badge. I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again."
