Working as a pundit at the tournament, Klopp described their fruitless efforts as "the most expensive non-transfer" his former club ever enacted.
At the time, Mbappe was on the verge of signing for Ligue 1 behemoths PSG for what is still the second-highest fee ever paid for a player.
The then-teenager met with Klopp and Liverpool representatives on board a private aeroplane "with five rooms" to discuss a possible move to Merseyside, Klopp explained.
Mbappe's family were also present, with the forward's mother known to be a fan of The Reds.
The former Liverpool manager told Magenta TV: "The most expensive non-transfer we [Liverpool] invested in. We flew from Blackpool to Nice. In Nice, the entire Mbappe family boarded a private jet with five rooms or something.
"We really went all out. Then we flew around in a circle, talked with the family, ate good food. We couldn't be seen. We flew in a circle. It was fantastic. And then he went to Paris."

Melissa Reddy - South African journalist and author of 'Believe Us: How Jurgen Klopp Transformed Liverpool Into Title Winners' - laid out the full extent of Liverpool's interest in the Paris-born sensation.
She claimed the club had been keeping tabs on Mbappe since 2014, when the attacker was just 15 years old.
"In February 2016, when Kylian Mbappe hadn’t yet signed professional terms with Monaco, I broke Liverpool’s interest in him. At that point, they had 16 months of recon on the forward," Reddy revealed in a post on X.
"Even then, I was told it would be 'practically impossible' to pull off because 'he will become the best player in the world'. PSG and Real Madrid were offering financial terms that just couldn’t be matched. Liverpool wanted to at least try.
"This meeting that Klopp speaks about was in 2017, and it was Mbappe’s mum that was so keen for it to happen."
Mbappe confirmed his mother's "love" for the 20-time English champions in an interview conducted while he was still a PSG player.
"We talked a little bit, but not too much. We talked a little bit," Mbappe told the Telegraph in 2022.
"I talked to Liverpool because it's the favourite club of my mum. My mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her!
"It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco, I met them. It’s a big club."
In the same interview, Mbappe discussed the tug of war over his signature between PSG and current employers Real Madrid, claiming that his nationality pushed him to delay a transfer to the Spanish capital.
"Of course, it was between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the end," continued Mbappe in 2022.
"Everybody knows I wanted to leave for Real Madrid last year and I think it was a good choice to leave last year. But now it’s different because I was a free agent.
"I was a free agent and it was important to give back to my country. If I had left I would have left as a great player, but there is a sentimental part. I don’t think my chapter is closed. Things were not over for me at PSG.
"I’m French and I know I’m important in the country and when you are important you have to think not only about football but about your life. I will be in France after my career."
Mbappe has excelled at the World Cup so far, sitting tied atop the Golden Boot standings with Lionel Messi after scoring his eighth goal at the tournament in France's win over Morocco to reach the semi-finals.
