Manchester City have signed former academy goalkeeper Pierce Charles - and immediately loaned him out to Queens Park Rangers. The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad but will spend the first of those in West London.
Charles, like his older brother Shea, came through City's academy but the shotstopper left at 16 to join Sheffield Wednesday. Over the last two years, he has worked his way into the team and impressed in what has been a difficult time for the South Yorkshire club.
Having monitored his progress, City have swooped to bring him back with an initial fee of £3m that could rise to £10m if certain thresholds are met relating to future City success. Charles will not work with Enzo Maresca this season but has been identified as a player that could help in the future.
“To be back at Manchester City is a very special and proud moment both for me and my family. I know first-hand what a special club City is and I am so excited about looking to the future," said Charles.
“City take the development of young players very seriously so I know that my loan to QPR will only help me grow and improve as a player too. I’ll now give everything I can for a successful season in the Championship before hopefully returning to Manchester a better goalkeeper.”
Charles follows Mathys Detourbet and Elliot Anderson through the door at City this summer to take the spending to over £140m. He also follows Detourbet in being immediately loaned back out, and with Anderson still at the World Cup it means currently there will be no new faces to report for the start of pre-season training in ten days.
