Tottenham receive the latest update on Liverpool star’s future.
Tottenham Hotspur have been showing great ambition in the summer transfer window, providing Roberto De Zerbi the tools required to build a strong squad to compete for European spots next season. Six new faces have arrived at White Hart Lane, and more is expected to follow in the coming weeks.
One position the north Londoners are planning to address is on the left of their attack, having struggled to stretch defences, create chances and score goals following the departure of club icon Son Heung-min. The ACL injuries to Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert has left Spurs with limited options off the left. Mathys Tel is currently the only left-wing option available, and that’s simply not enough for a side aiming to challenge for European spots next season.
It has been reported in recent weeks that Tottenham are interested in signing Liverpool star Cody Gakpo. He was one of the few to impress for the Netherlands at the World Cup, scoring three goals and supplying an assist in four appearances. However, the Netherlands exited the World Cup at the hands of Morocco in the Round of 32 earlier this week.
Journalist gives update on the future of Cody Gakpo at Liverpool amid Tottenham interest
Having been one of Arne Slot’s mainstays across two seasons, Cody Gakpo’s position at Liverpool is less safe under new boss Andoni Iraola. The Dutchman endured an underwhelming last season, failing to produce the level of performances from the Reds’ title-winning 2024/25 campaign.
Yet, Andoni Iraola is understood to be keen to work with the forward once he’s back from his post-World Cup cooling break, and going by the latest revelation from a respected journalist, the Liverpool hierarchy also seem eager to keep hold of him.
The Daily Mail reporter Lewis Steele delivered an update on Gakpo’s situation at Anfield, affirming that club chiefs are planning for the 2026/27 campaign with him as part of the squad.
“He’s not as off-limits as he was maybe 12 months ago,” Lewis Steele said on The Redmen TV.
“But I still think I’d be surprised if he wasn’t a Liverpool player come the end of the summer transfer window.
“I think the word internally is that they’re planning for [next season] with him.”
Tottenham learn Cody Gakpo’s asking price
Transfer news king Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that Tottenham hold an interest in Gakpo, but nothing is advanced at this stage and no contact has been made with Liverpool.
The 27-year-old endured a subdued 2025/26 season, but he again showed his ability to rise to the big occasion by netting three goals at the World Cup. Iraola wants to keep him, especially after Mohamed Salah’s exit and a serious Achilles injury to Hugo Ekitike. The Reds have reinforced their wide attacking options with the signing of Victor Munoz from Spanish side Osasuna, but they lack depth in the forward department.
So, it’d take an astronomical offer from Tottenham to persuade the Liverpool bosses to consider selling Gakpo. The onus is now on the Spurs chiefs to present an offer for the player that fulfils the Merseyside club’s financial demands.
