Bruno Guimaraes has told Newcastle he wants to leave St James’ Park this summer. As per latest Arsenal transfer news, the club are ready to test Newcastle’s resolve this window.
Arsenal prepare fresh move for Bruno Guimaraes
As reported by BBC, Arsenal have shown they are willing to pay close to £60million for the Brazilian midfielder. Newcastle rejected a lower offer from Arsenal back in June. They have made no plans to change their stance. The two clubs have not held direct talks yet.
Mikel Arteta has long admired Bruno Guimaraes. The Premier League champions now see a real chance to land him. The 28-year-old would give Arteta a ready-made option in midfield. He could play next to Declan Rice or step in when Rice needs rest. Rice has carried a heavy load for Arsenal over the past year.
Guimaraes’ stats for the 2025-26 season, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Matches Goals Assists Successful passes
Premier League 29 9 5 1,250
EFL Cup 4 0 2 176
UCL 7 0 0 222
Why Arsenal want Bruno Guimaraes
Guimaraes fits the profile Arsenal usually target. His age sits at the older end of their usual range. The club have also hinted that players like Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard could leave this summer. An experienced leader like Guimaraes could help balance the squad if those exits happen. His calm style on the ball would add control to Arsenal’s midfield. That kind of control helps a team hold its shape when a game gets stretched.
Bruno Guimaraes has become one of the most reliable players in English football since his move from Lyon in January 2022. As reported by FOTMOB, he has made 153 Premier League appearances for Newcastle. He has scored 30 goals and set up 26 more for his teammates. Few defensive midfielders in the league can match that output. That mix of goals, assists and form is why Arsenal see him as a genuine upgrade.
What losing Guimaraes would mean for Newcastle
Anthony Gordon has already left Newcastle for Barcelona this summer, with Sandro Tonali also departing after Tottenham agreed a transfer worth up to £100 million. If Guimaraes leaves as well, the club would lose three key players in one year, a level of turnover few Premier League squads could absorb without real damage.
Guimaraes is more than a squad player at Newcastle. He wears the captain’s armband and shares a bond with supporters built over four years at the club. As per BBC, after winning the Carabao Cup in 2025, he said, “This is my second home. We are making history. Some day, when I leave this club, I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to Shearer.” Losing a player with that kind of standing would cost Newcastle far more than just a place in the starting eleven.
From a tactical view, Bruno Guimaraes gives Newcastle their spark from deep midfield. He carries the ball through midfield lines himself rather than simply recycling possession, and he drives the team forward from deep. He offers a level of control that Eddie Howe would find hard to replace fast. As reported by The Athletic, Newcastle are tracking Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Auxerre’s Kevin Danois as cover, but neither has played regular top-flight football at Guimaraes’ level. Selling their captain now, with no fresh signing in place, would leave Howe short on both leadership and quality this season.
