Michael Edwards has left his role at Fenway Sports Group.
The reliable Paul Joyce has confirmed the news.
As widely thought, the fact that FSG were unable to deliver on their promised multi-club model has contributed to the executive’s decision to step down from his role as FSG CEO of Football.
He leaves two years into his three year contract at Anfield.
Paul Joyce report for the Times:
“Frustration at FSG’s lack of progress in acquiring a second European team and embracing the multi-club model prompted Edwards to first signal his intention to move on last autumn. He subsequently tendered his resignation and departs two years into a three-year contract.”
It has been reported that FSG president Mike Gordon will now take over Edwards’ duties at the club in the interim, controlling the football operations for the time being.
It’s added by Paul Joyce:
“Regarding squad strengthening, all preparatory work has been undertaken and the responsibility for executing the strategy would fall on Hughes rather than Edwards.”
UPDATE
Fenway Sports Group, in a media release, have confirmed that Edwards has departed.
An excerpt from their statement reads:
“Fenway Sports Group (FSG), a global sports, marketing, media, entertainment and real estate company, today announced that Michael Edwards will leave his role as CEO of Football prior to the start of Liverpool FC’s pre-season preparations, bringing to a close his second tenure with the organization during which he oversaw Liverpool’s football operation while also supporting the continued development of FSG’s wider football ambitions.”
