Christian Norgaard could face an uncertain future at Arsenal this summer if the club complete a move for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes.
The Denmark international joined the Gunners from Brentford last summer and played an important squad role during Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning campaign.
Norgaard’s experience and leadership made him a valuable option for Mikel Arteta throughout the season, but reports suggest his place in the squad could come under threat if another high-profile midfielder arrives.
Arsenal continue to be strongly linked with Guimaraes after the Brazil international reportedly informed Newcastle of his desire to move to north London.
While Newcastle have rejected an opening bid and remain determined to keep their captain, discussions are expected to continue as Arsenal look to strengthen an already impressive midfield.
If Guimaraes eventually joins the Premier League champions, Arteta would have an abundance of options in the middle of the park.
Declan Rice and club captain Martin Odegaard remain automatic selections when available.
Martin Zubimendi established himself during his first season at the Emirates after arriving from Real Sociedad last summer and is expected to play an even bigger role this campaign.
Mikel Merino also enjoyed an impressive debut season in north London, while Myles Lewis-Skelly has shown he can operate in midfield despite becoming Arsenal’s first-choice left-back for much of last season.
That depth could leave Norgaard further down the pecking order.
Reports in Denmark claim Arsenal would be willing to consider offers for the 32-year-old if Guimaraes is signed, with Crystal Palace among the clubs credited with an interest.
A move to Selhurst Park would allow Norgaard to remain in London while potentially securing more regular first-team football.
Despite the speculation, staying at Arsenal also remains a realistic possibility.
Arteta values experienced professionals capable of contributing both on and off the pitch, particularly with Arsenal preparing to challenge on multiple fronts in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Norgaard also retired from international football earlier this year after earning 41 caps for Denmark, allowing him to focus solely on club commitments.
That decision could help him remain an important squad player over another demanding season.
For now, much depends on Arsenal’s pursuit of Guimaraes.
Should the Brazilian complete his move to the Emirates, the Premier League champions would possess one of Europe’s strongest midfield groups, although it could also force difficult decisions over the futures of players such as Norgaard.
