Michael Edwards has released a statement following his exit as FSG CEO of Football.

First arriving at Anfield in 2011, Edwards initially operated in the shadows as a data‑driven analyst and performance specialist before rising to the role of sporting director.

After stepping away in 2022, he returned to Fenway Sports Group in March 2024 in a newly created position as CEO of Football, taking on a broader brief that stretched beyond Liverpool to FSG’s wider football ambitions.

However, his second spell has now ended with the 47-year-old now releasing a public statement.

It has been suggested that FSG’s unwillingness to incorporate a multi-club club ownership model as promised was a big reason why Edwards has decided to depart for a second time in four years.

In a media release from the Boston-based group, Edwards wrote:

“It has been a privilege to return to Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool Football Club at such an important moment,” Edwards said.

“I leave believing Liverpool is in a strong position, with outstanding people, a clear direction and the foundations in place for continued success.”

“When I returned, I was excited not only by the opportunity to help guide Liverpool through an important period of transition, but also by the chance to help shape FSG’s wider football ambitions.”

“While that broader project ultimately evolved differently to how we had originally envisaged, I am proud of the work our team undertook in presenting ownership with a broad range of thoughtful and well-developed options for the future.”

“I’d like to thank Mike, John, Tom and everyone across FSG and Liverpool for their support and friendship and, most importantly, the supporters, whose passion makes this club so special. I will

always be grateful to have been part of its story.”

It has been reported that FSG president Mike Gordon will now take over Edwards’ duties at the club in the interim, controlling the football operations for the time being.
