‘A waste’ - Anthony Gordon honest on Newcastle United situation after £70m Barcelona transfer

Gareth Southgate snubbed Anthony Gordon as England limped to the Euro 2024 final two years ago.

Anthony Gordon has dismissed his Euro 2024 campaign as a “waste of a summer” as he bids to become a World Cup semi-finalist.

Newcastle United supporters were desperate for Gareth Southgate to give Gordon a chance in Germany. He had recently picked up the club’s Player of the Season award and was arguably the Premier League’s most in-form left-winger.

But he played just four minutes as England limped to the final. Phil Foden - left out of the current squad - was used out of position and had little impact on the tournament.

Gordon struggled to make an impact and was benched for the round-of-32 clash with DR Congo - before coming on as a substitute to provide two assists. He followed that up with arguably his two best England performances against Mexico last weekend.

When we got the squad numbers for this tournament, I'm not going to lie, I wanted number 11! But when I got number 18, which I had at the Euros, I thought, 'Actually, this gives me the opportunity to put that right, to make something special from it'.'”
