The Star reported on Friday that Sheffield United made exploratory contact with former Everton veteran Seamus Coleman
The news, as reported by The Star on Friday, that Sheffield United have made contact with Seamus Coleman regarding his future - the defender having left Everton at the end of the season - has caused much debate amongst Blades fans.
As stated in the report, nothing is understood to be imminent, however, with Coleman still deciding whether to prolong his playing career or hang up his boots and move into coaching. The opportunity of a role at Everton is thought to be on the table for him.
At 37 he is, of course, at the very back end of his career but he does bring a wealth of experience and is highly-regarded as the ultimate professional.
Here, from a Blades point of view, we look at the pros and cons of signing the Republic of Ireland international.
Pro – Character
The 37-year-old left Everton at the close of the 2025/26 season, ending a 17-year stay on Merseyside, where he made over 400 appearances.
Coleman’s loyalty cannot be questioned, committing almost half of his life to Everton and would undoubtedly be a great person to have around the club.
On top of that, Coleman was a long-serving club captain for the Toffees and would be a top role model for Sheffield United’s young squad to look up to no matter whether he’s on or off the pitch.

Con – Age
The most obvious concern would be Coleman’s age, with potential worries over a physical decline in the defender and, therefore, how many minutes he will be able to play.
Many will wonder whether that decline has already taken place, with Coleman only featuring 13 times for Everton in the last two seasons, and only seven of those have been as a starter.
Pro – Experience
Coleman has been at the very top for the vast majority of his career and has played against the very best in the Premier League. Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale, to name just a few.
The experience of playing against some of the Premier League’s most elite would be valuable in the Championship for the Blades.
On top of his 400-plus club features, Coleman has also made an impressive 81 appearances for the Republic of Ireland, even being called up to their most recent friendlies this summer against Qatar and Canada, playing 90 and 70 minutes respectively.

Con – Short-Term Option
For a player of Coleman’s age, it would be likely that this transfer would be a one-year deal, which does not give Chris Wilder long-term stability in the right-back position.
It is also known that Coleman is eyeing up coaching as his next venture and is deciding whether or not to hang up the boots this summer.
This means that should Wilder land the experienced defender, the clock on his time at the club will be quickly ticking down from the moment he walks through the door.

Pro – Free Transfer
After leaving Everton, Coleman is now a free agent, and Wilder could get him signed up for nothing at all.
In the Blades’ current position, the opportunity to get a player of Coleman’s quality into the club for no fee would be too good to pass up.
Apart from wages, this would be a low-risk transfer to bring a high-quality option into the building, allowing Wilder to focus his budget on reinforcement in other areas of the squad.
Con – The System
Current first-choice full-backs Femi Seriki and Harrison Burrows are both young and full of energy, with the ability to get up and down the pitch as many modern full-backs do.
There would be question marks over Coleman’s ability to maintain such energy in his right-back position, again linking back to his age and lack of minutes as of late.
Despite operating as a right-wing-back for the Republic of Ireland, goal contributions are a rare feat for Coleman, and his involvement could disrupt the balance of the team.
Worth a go?
All things considered, Coleman’s addition to the Sheffield United squad would be a smart move, considering his experience and the low-risk nature of the potential move.
The main questions all link back to Coleman’s age; however, as another option in the squad with undoubted quality and his leadership qualities both on and off this pitch, it is clear the defender would be a decent coup for the Blades.
