Michael Edwards‘ exit from FSG and Liverpool was announced in the big news on Friday, as Richard Hughes‘ role in overseeing summer transfers was emphasised.
Liverpool’s transfer prep work has been fully undertaken
The fallout from Edwards’ resignation, for many, has primarily focused on what it means for Liverpool’s transfer dealings in the weeks to come.
As the *Times*‘ Paul Joyce has noted, “all preparatory work has been undertaken” in relation to new signings, with sporting director Hughes responsible for “executing the strategy.”

This is not new, as Hughes spearheaded the deals for Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, and was the man to inform Arne Slot his services were no longer needed.
Liverpool have reportedly known about Edwards’ exit since last year, and thus his exit will not force a rethink this late into the window.
Targets will have been identified, but the pressure is on Hughes to turn groundwork into deals by the start of September.

• Michael Edwards has resigned from his role as FSG’s CEO of Football with immediate effect. With multi-club plans shelved, he is moving on. It is another big off-field shift for the club.
• Jurgen Klopp has told a sensational story of when he and club officials flew in a circle in a lavish private jet with Kylian Mbappe and his family to make a pitch for a move to Liverpool – project Mbappe was real!
• Victor Munoz has been cleared to feature for Spain in their quarter-final vs. Belgium on Friday. Let’s hope we get our first glimpse, but remember he’s not played competitively since May.
• Liverpool’s pre-season proper starts next week, and some of their rivals are travelling a lot further than the Reds – see how the summer schedule compares with the rest of the league here.
• A new right-back is expected this summer, but Liverpool continue to watch possible options move to other clubs or sign new contracts. It is far from ideal.
Liverpool need a No. 6 – here’s why
Liverpool’s only really successful season since Fabinho left was when they had Ryan Gravenberch playing as a disciplined No. 6. Harry McMullen argues why the position needs to be prioritised:
“Liverpool have identified this position and suitable targets year on year, and for understandable reasons, they have kept their powder dry each time.
“However, while each occasion has reached understandable outcomes, over time, the choice to delay making a signing has left the team with a clear weakness.
“As we saw in 2024/25, a coach can mask it for a while, but without committed recruitment, it will always reappear.”

• Borussia Dortmund rejected a £17 million offer from Barcelona for Karim Adeyemi. He seems to have been around forever, but he’s still only 24. The Premier League was reportedly his preferred destination (The Athletic)
• Former Liverpool player Neco Williams his reportedly a target for Man United and Newcastle. We’re due a 15% sell-on fee, but maybe we should use that as a discount for a deal instead?!
• Fenerbahce are showing “strong interest” in Aston Villa‘s Ollie Watkins. He’d get a pay rise, but it still seems too early for a move like that (The Mail)
Liverpool FC: On this day

On this day in 2015, Jordan Henderson was officially confirmed as the new club captain, following the departure of Steven Gerrard.
It was far from a surprise, with Gerrard handing over the armband throughout his last season at the club, but it marked a significant juncture in the club’s history.
Henderson was going into his fifth season with the club, and after making the decision, Brendan Rodgers said: “Jordan has grown as a person and as a player since arriving at Liverpool and is ready to take up this challenge.
“He will be his own person, with his own style of leadership and his own ideas and methods.”
In total, Henderson played 268 games as captain, the fifth-most of any Liverpool player. He was vocal and led by example, and he knew how to lift a trophy!
