One of Liverpool’s biggest concerns last season was the lack of depth in Arne Slot’s squad. Despite a summer of high-profile arrivals, several players also left the AXA Training Centre, leaving the Reds short in key areas.
The result was a squad that appeared unbalanced and, at times, ill-equipped to compete across four competitions last campaign.
While Mohamed Salah’s departure has been replaced by the arrival of Victor Munoz in terms of squad numbers, Liverpool still need further reinforcements before the new season begins.
One area the Reds are expected to strengthen is midfield, with Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes reportedly open to a move to Anfield.
The Brazil international is attracting interest following Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League. Gomes, who has earned 10 caps for Brazil, has been one of Wolves’ standout performers in defensive midfield – a position Liverpool are looking to improve.
According to talkSPORT, Gomes’ proposed move to Atletico Madrid has collapsed after the Spanish club decided to pursue another target. It had previously been reported that the midfielder was close to joining Atletico Madrid.
Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 and has made more than 100 appearances for the club. He featured 35 times during their 2025/26 Premier League relegation campaign.
In a 2022 interview with ESPN Brazil, Joao Gomes revealed his admiration for Liverpool and admitted he would like to play at Anfield.
“Liverpool is a team I would play for,” Gomes said. “I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.”
Joao Gomes was named Wolves’ Players’ Player of the Season last term. He has three years of Premier League experience and could be available for a reduced fee following the club’s relegation.
Liverpool have previously found success by signing players from relegated sides, bringing in Andy Robertson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri after their respective clubs dropped out of the Premier League.
Andoni Iraola’s side could look to follow a similar approach as they consider strengthening their midfield options this summer.
